Grounds-Think About Spring

What You Need To Do Now

While most businesses are busy prepping their grounds for winter, many don’t realize that now is the perfect time to start planning for spring. Below are the three main areas commercial properties should be thinking about after the hustle and bustle of the holiday season passes.

Grounds Maintenance - Spring Cleanup

1. Spring inspection of any cold/snow damage on plants. If there are any plant beds that need to be cleaned out. Taking a look at hardscaping elements like fences, benches or walls that may have rotted or bowed. Also check for any animal burrows from rabbits, skunks, etc.

2. Address any of the hardscaping issues first like leveling out any stepping stones, cleaning out gutters, fixing fences, damages to retaining walls, etc.

3. Pick up leaves, twigs, and other debris that have complied over winter months. Make sure that your garden beds got a thorough cleanup and don’t have any matted down leaves or fallen branches in them.

4. It’s also a good time to clean out ponds or water features that may have debris. Start by skimming any surface floaters. Clean using a vacuum to get the floor of the pond. Add any appropriate cleaning supplements to help with bacteria and break down any lingering waste. Remove algae to improve quality of the water and increase the buildup of sludge. Finally, optimize water filtration so that it is performing at its best and reduce future maintenance!

Grounds Maintenance - Spring Weed Control

1. Timing is everything! Once the soil reaches 50 degrees or higher, weeds start germinating. If the temperature has stayed around 50 degrees for at least a week, the weeds will slowly start emerging from the soil. By keeping a close eye on the soil temperature, you can prepare for the proper steps to beat the weeds before they grow.
2. Pre-Emergent herbicide is a preventative weed control that is applied in the spring season. The benefit of applying this chemical is that it prevents seeds from germinating and weeds from growing.  Keep a close eye on the soil temperature, because it will have no effect on weeds if they have begun growing.
3. Mow high and as often as possible. Instead of mowing once a week, try every five days for the first six weeks for fuller and thicker lawn. The more water and sunlight weeds, get the more they will grow!

Grounds Maintenance - Spring Irrigation Startup

1. Check sprinkler heads. They are the most vulnerable part of your irrigation system, they can easily get clogged by any debris. If any of the holes are clogged, there might be too much water hitting certain areas or not enough in others. This can lead to a ton of wasted water.
2. Check the pump to make sure that it is working properly. If water isn’t being delivered to the appropriate areas or mysteriously turns off, that is not a good sign. Make sure that the pump is in good working condition before it is needed.
3. Check the system components or any water valves that distribute water to the system. Any leaks can result in a hefty water bill.
4. Take it easy when you finally turn the water back on! Allow your sprinkler system and valves to fill with water gradually.
